The 2008 Turkish Grand Prix is the fifth round of the 2008 Formula One season, and will emanate from the Istanbul Racing Circuit in Istanbul, Turkey from the 9th through the 11th of May 2008. The 2008 edition of the race will only be the fourth formula one race held in the country and will be the first time the Turky event was placed 4th on the calendar, as the race was previously the 14th in 2005 and 2006 before moving to the 12th round last season.
The racing event will begin with a couple of Friday practice sessions, one in the morning at 10 A.M. and the other in the afternoon at 2 P.M. Drivers will have another practice session on Saturday at 11 A.M. and then will be competing in the qualifying round at 2 in the afternoon. The main event will take place on the 11th at 3 P.M. (All times are subject to change)
Ferrari's Felipe Massa won three races in 2007, and the Turkish GP is one of them. He began the race at pole position after qualifying at 1:27.329 then went on to win the race over teammate Kimi Räikkönen and McLaren's Fernando Alonso at 1:26:42.161. Juan Pablo Montoya's run in the 2005 Turkish GP is thus far the fastest lap record at 1:24.770.
Circuit History
The circuit in Istanbul first hosted the famed formula one event in 2005 and has since hosted the annual event every year. The site of the Hermann Tilke-designed circuit is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, 6 km from the junction of Kurtkoy on the north side of TEM Motorway, linking Istanbul to Ankara.
Like the races in San Marino and Brazil, the Turkey race runs an anti-clockwise lap with a circuit that contains a series of corners and the absence of long straights which reduces the drivers' opportunity to overtake other competitors. The venue has a seating capacity of around 130,000, with 25,000 of those in the main grandstand, while parking space is available for 12,000 cars.
