The AMA Superbike Championship was started in 1976 to provide an affordable series for professional race teams. It soon became a vehicle for showcasing the sportsbike models of the various manufacturers.
It was adopted on an international level by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), who have since taken it to almost every developed country in the world.
In 1986 the AMA separated their professional racing programs from the Grand National Championship program allowing riders to gain points from: road racing’ dirt-oval, short track and tourist trophy events. These points could be accumulated and combined from all the different formats and aimed at one single goal — the coveted AMA Grand National Championship title.
The AMA Superbike Championship now stands as the world’s number one national Superbike series, and runs hand in hand with the AMA Supersport Championship, AMA Superstock, and AMA Formula Xtreme classes
