AMA Supermoto

Supermoto (also known as Supermotard) is a cross between motocross and road racing. It was started in the late 1970s to decide once and for all who the better riders were - road, off-road or flat track? Races are normally held on tracks containing 70% road and 30% off-road, using converted motocross bikes.
It first prospered in the USA under the title of superbikers and ran from 1979-1985 as an annual event (commisioned and televised by ABC), held at Carlsbad Raceway in southern California. In 1985 ABC cancelled the show due to budget restraints and the sport died in the USA.
European riders who had participated in the races brought the sport back to Europe, where it prospered in France and became known there as Supermotard.
It was resurrected again in 2003 when AMA started the AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championships.
The original bikes used in supermoto were all converted motocross, 2 stroke machines, but are now mainly comprised of single cylinder, 4 stroke dirtbikes, sporting road racing wide slicks.
The first factory built bike did not appear until 1991 when an Italian manufacturer, Gilera produced it's 'Nordwest' model. It wasn't until 2004+ before they were joined by other European bike firms.
