A Typical Champcar

In 1909 the American Automobile Association (AAA) established the national driving championship and began sanctioning auto racing in the United States, right up to 1956, when the United States Automobile Club (USAC) was founded and tookover sanctioning from the AAA.

USAC controlled the championship until 1979 when an organization called Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) was formed by Dan Gurney in direct competition with the long established USAC National championship.

Champ Car, shortened from "Championship Car", has been the name for this class of cars for many decades. It is also the common name for the Champ Car World Series.

In 2000, CART designated the Vanderbilt Cup as its series championship trophy.

CART was bought by the Open Wheel Racing Series(OWRS) (formed by Gerald Forsythe, Paul Gentilozzi, and Kevin Kalkhoven), ensuring that Champ Car racing would see its 25th Aniversary season in 2004.
