Biography
David Gilliland was born on April 1, 1976 at Riverside, California. He started working on his father Butch Gilliland's Winston West Series team in 1996. He became crew chief of the team at the age of 19.David won the 1999 track championship at Perris Speedway.
David won five races in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour Series in 2003.
Gilliland won his first NASCAR Grand National Division West Series race at Mesa Marin Raceway. He was also named the series' rookie of the year.
In 2003, Gilliland failed to qualify the Las Vegas 350 in the Craftsman Truck Series but he did make his Busch Series debut at Phoenix.
Gilliland became the driver of Robert Yates Racing's No. 38 in lieu of Elliott Sadler in the Cup Series.
