The Ferrari F2008 is the latest Formula One racing car launched by Scuderia Ferrari to compete in the 2008 Formula One season.

The vehicle, which is the 54th single-seater manufactured by the team to participate in the Formula One world championship, was officially unveiled to the public on January 6, 2008 at the constructor's Maranello base in Italy. The car, which will be raced by World champion driver Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa, had its first shakedown at Ferrari's Fiorano test track on January 7th 2008.

Design

Despite securing both drivers' and constructors' championships in 2007, there was no resting for Scuderia Ferrari as the team went on to develop a better design for their 2008 challenger to correct some issues that were encountered with the F2007 vehicle in preparation for the team's title defense.

The design of the F2008, codenamed internally as the 659, employs a new electronic system called Standard Electronic Control Unit (SECU) produced by McLaren Electronic Systems which consists of a single control unit and a software system. The SECU removes most of the driver aids used in previous seasons, including traction control, engine braking and electronically assisted starting system. It also makes the management of the differential, engine and gearchanges easier.

The new vehicle is also said to be heavier than its predecessor so as to implement design changes in conjunction with the new rules that will be implemented for the 2008 season. Areas affected by said rules are the gearbox (must be used for four consecutive events), safety (introduction of higher side protection around the driver's helmet), and materials (limit to the type of composites that can be used).

The engine, which basic structure is practically unchanged from the unit homologated at the start of last season, is mounted longitudinally and continues as a load bearing element. The auxiliary systems, air and fuel intakes have also been further developed.

Much of the F2008's development has also been dedicated to the improvement of the tractability by working on the electronics and inlets.
