Formula One
As the name suggests, Formula One racing is at the pinnacle of auto racing. All participants have to race to a 'formula' or set of rules as defined by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
The first world championship race was held at Silverstone, England in 1950. Nowadays, the world championships are comprised of a set of Grand Prix racing mostly on closed circuits.
The present day sees Formula One pulling the biggest crowds of spectators and the largest television audiences. This also makes it a huge money spinner, with all the benefits and disadvantages that go with it. Sponsors invest fortunes into the sport and race teams operate on 'space flight' budgets - there is no place here for the smaller teams or one man bands.
The driver's environment is no place for the faint hearted either. Lives are still, albeit occasionaly, lost on the track.
