IHRA History
THe National Import Racing Association (NIRA) was formed in 1970 by Larry Carrier, operating mainly from its headquarters in Bristol, Tennessee, in the south eastern sector of the USA.
It was bought by Texan racer and track operator, Billy Meyer, in 1988 who moved the headquarters to Waco, Texas and restructured all the classes.
One of drag racing's most successful additions came in 1990 when the Pro Modified class was introduced.
THe IHRA was purchased by Bill Bader in 1998, who then expanded the series from it's new headquarters in Norwalk, Ohio. He sold the IHRA to Clear Channel Communications, but remained as president until his retirement in October 2004.
