Ice Racing
Ice racing usually takes place in the colder regions of the planet and at higher latitudes, using cars or motorcycles with rubber or studded tyres.
Most ice racing uses 4-stroke Jawa motorcycles that have tyres with as many as 500 studs around 2-3 inches long.
Ice racing started in Ontario in the 1960s as an inexpensive novelty on frozen lakes and rivers, but in the 1970s, the championships were relocated at purpose built, permanent tracks in Minden, Ontario.
Ice racing has now grown to include four main classes using unstudded tyres, but with no other specialised equipment needed. The studded tyre classes have slightly higher needs for safety, due to the faster speeds attained with the extra grip.
