Track Details

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is situated at the west side of the city. With a distance 2.5 miles, this oval shaped track has a banking of 9° turns and 0°straights. Its front stretch is 3,330 feet and backstretch is 3,330 feet. Over 250,000 patrons can be accommodated in the venue.


History

The speedway was constructed in the year 1909 by its four founders. In 1910, three separate races were held in the track during weekends but due to poor attendance, the management instead chose to run one large event.

May 30, 1911, the track had its first 500-Mile International Sweepstakes. Indianapolis 500 became one of the most alluring aspects of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
