The Indy Racing League (IRL) was formed in 1994 by Tony George as a more economically viable alternative to CART and is now the sanctioning body for the (mainly American) open-wheel racing series.
'Indy Car' is a term used generically for most open wheel racing in the US - taken from the most famous of the races - the Indianapolis 500 (Indy 500). it races strictly on ovals and caters for single-seater chassis with 3.5-litre non-turbo engines, with strict rules to keep the costs down.
There has been, for many years, much confusion, argument and law suits regarding the use of the name 'Indy Car' with Tony George coming out as the eventual title holder. Tony George renamed his premier series the IRL IndyCAr Series for the start of the 2003 season.
