Feature Article: Offshore Powerboats

Offshore Powerboat Racing is the equivalent of F1 car racing and the sport of the elite, due to the exceptionally high costs of the boats required. The original boats were huge sea-going vessels with powerful engines, but they are slowly being replaced by smaller "in-shore" boats that can be raced on rivers and lakes.

The sport is governed by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) in Europe, the Middle East and Asia with responsibility shared by the SBI, APBA, UIM, and OSS in the USA.

Each race is timed and follows a circuit, usually lasting 45 minutes with speeds reaching upwards of 170mph for some classes.

F1 Powerboat Racing World Championship

The F1 Powerboat Racing World Championship began in 1981 with similar rules to F1 motor racing. The sport is still an amateur discipline and relies heavily on sponsors and private funding.
