NASCAR Racing

We have all heard of NASCAR in one form or another, even if its only from a computer game, but its hard to realise just how far it has come from its early days, or that it has its roots in the era of prohibition.

Moonshine running was big business with big profits and the drivers or'runners' as they were known needed fast cars to do their business. When prohibition was lifted, the runners were left with fast and expensive cars and little or no income, until Daytona Beach started hosting car racing events.

These races were popular in the southern US, but had no organisation to standardise the rules or oversee fairplay.

This changed on February 21, 1947, when William France Snr. met with other race drivers and promoters, wrote some rules on the back of a napkin and gave birth to the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).

NASCAR hosted its first event at Daytona Beach on February 15, 1948.

Todays NASCAR uses high tech materials and equipment to produce faster and safer cars and has evolved into one of the biggest events in America.

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is currently the largest sanctioning body of motorsports in the United States.
