NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series

The NEXTEL Cup series started in 1950 as the Grand National (not the (Busch Series Grand National) until 1972 when it changed its name to the Winston Cup Series due to its sponsorship by the tobacco firm R.J. Reynolds.

It was not until 2003, when R.J. Reynolds dropped their sponsorship and NASCAR found a new sponsor, NEXTEL (a telecoms company) that the name changed to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup.

THe NEXTEL Cup Series is the top division of the many NASCAR series and attracts a huge following in the USA.
