Baja SAE is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and had its humble beginnings in mid-1970's, 1976 to be precise, with the maiden competition supervised by Dr. J. F. Stevens. Since then, the competition has elevated to become the venue for engineering design series for university teams. Universities from around the world take part in this event, constructing small off-road vehicles that are strong and durable enough to withstand the harshest elements of rough terrain. The participating cars use the same engines of the same specifications, which as of 2002, is an unmodified Briggs & Stratton Intek 20 with a power output of approximately 7.5 kW(=10 bhp).
