Ice Racing

Ice Racing is a type of motorsport that is contested on ice, usually on frozen lakes, rivers, or on carefully groomed frozen lots. This kind of competition is predominant in higher latitudes such as Canada, the northern United States, and in northern Europe. Ice racing warm-climate territories is possible but these competitions are only limited to motorcycles and ATV's. Automobile ice racing is quite a success in France with the country's Trophée Andros series drawing interest from former F1 drivers Alain Prost and Olivier Panis. The tourney was often held on damped snow tracks in French ski stations with a final race on artificial ice in Paris Stade de France.

Ice racing in Canada started as early as forty years ago, with the early competitions being conducted on frozen lakes and rivers. However, since the late 1970's, these contests moved to more permanent facilities at the fairgrounds in Minden, Ontario including the Ontario championships. In this set-up, the track is laid out, then repeatedly coated with water until a thick layer of ice is built up between the snowbanks that delineate the course. The season runs from mid-January until early March, with four basic rubber-to-ice classes, namely Class 1 or rear-wheel drive short wheelbase, Class 2 or front engine-front drive/short wheelbase up to 3 litres, Class 3 or front engine-front drive/long wheelbase up to 3 litres, and Class 4 or 4WD up to 3 litres.
