Lawn Mower Racing

Lawn Mower Racing is a type of motorsport involving modified lawnmowers, either the ride-on or self-propelled variety. This obscure but fascinating variety of racing was thought off by one Irishman named Jim Gavin, who along with his pals, decided to create a cheaper motorsport alternative which is accessible to all racing enthusiasts. The sport was officially unveiled in 1973 at a pub called the Cricketers Arms in the village of Wisborough Green in Sussex and soon after, the “British Lawn Mower Racing Association” was born. Lawnmower racing has indeed come a long way, from its first run at a local farmers field where about eighty participants competed for the inaugural event, to the current annual events conducted which usually include an "endurance type" racing that last about 6-12 hours. Among the celebrities and motor racing legends that have tried their hand behind the lawnmower wheels include Sir Stirling Moss, Derek Bell and Oliver Reed.

The British Lawn Mower Racing Association (BLMRA) was founded in 1973 at the Cricketers Arms in Wisborough Green, West Sussex. Jim Gavin, the known "mastermind" of lawnmower racing, spearheaded the organization after deciding to depart from race and rally cars when the cost of the motorsport became too much for the budget mainly due to the rise of sponsorship. The BLMRA kept the sport cost-friendly as they promoted it minus ths sponsorship, commercialism, cash prizes, and engine modifications, which is still the case in present day. BLMRA has more then tripled the original number of members it had, with more than 250 enthusiasts coming together from all over the country to appear at Country Shows, Fayres and Steam Rallies. The BLMRA still sticks to its origins as a non-profit making organisation (any profits are given to charities or good causes) while providing well organised and inexpensive motor sport with a strong social atmosphere.
