Big Wheels. Large Suspensions. Appetite for destruction. Monster Trucks have been used for competition and as means of sports entertainment for quite some time now. They trace their roots from the era of modified pickup trucks when these vehicles have gained popularity in several motorsporting events such as mud bogging and truck pulling. Soon after, lifted trucks were purposely built not only to be entered in these competitions, but also to be pitted against each other for the title of "biggest truck" developed. The Bigfoot, created by Bob Chandler, earns the distinction of being the first monster truck, and the first of its kind to crush cars. At the moment, lots of monster trucks have already been developed to make car crushing a sport, and compete in other types of events. Among the more popular monster truck series today include, the Monster Jam series, the Monster Truck Challenge, Monster Nationals, and the AMP Live Events among others.

After monster truck enthusiasts have began to discover the art of car crushing in the early 1980's, it was apparent that the need for a body that would oversee events involving these behemoths was essential in order to build a safe environment for both competitors and fans. Not long after, the International Monster Truck Racing Association (MTRA) was born. Bob Chandler, the originator of the very first monster truck, got together with several owner/drivers in 1987 to discuss and create an interim board which three months later became official in the first ever MTRA meeting. Since then, the get together have been conducted annually and rules and regulations have been constantly reviewed and developed to make the sport safer yet continue to be entertaining.
