Motorcycle Endurance Racing

Motorcycle Endurance Racing, like its autosport counterpart, aims to test both the durability of the equipment and the endurance of its riders. During the earlier days of endurance racing, cars and motorcycles actually compete side by side before getting separated in their respective events soon after. In motorcycle endurance racing, teams with multiple riders will be challenged to cover a large distance in a single event but are allowed to change during the race. The contest can either be a competition to cover a set distance in laps as quickly as possible, or to cover as much distance as possible over a preset amount of time. Although one of the premier motorcycle endurance racing, the Bol d'Or, began as early as 1922, it was not during the post World War II era that the sport began to expand with the establishment of several endurance races that include the 24 Hour Race in Warsage, Belgium in 1951, the 24 Hours of Montjuich in Barcelona in 1957, the 24 hours in Monza, Italy in 1959, and the 500 Miles of Thruxton as well as the inaugural FIM Endurance Cup in 1960.

The Bol d'or is one of the pioneering motorcycle endurance races that is still active at the moment. Originally competed on by both cars and motorcycles, this race was first conducted on 1922 at a track in Vaujours, Clichy-sous-Bois and Livry-Gargan with one rider per motorcycle. Since then, the competition has featured teams with three riders taking turns at the motorcycle and has moved to the Magny-Cours since 2000. Aside from the main race, the 24-hour racing event also features a giant motorcycle rally, a carnival, a motorcycle show, and other motorcycling events which include the side races namely the La tasse d'or (the golden cup, for bikes of less than 50cc), the Le bol d'or classic (the classic golden bowl, for classic bikes), and the Le bol d'argent (the silver bowl, an amateur race preceeding the main race).
