Open Road Racing is a high-speed automotive rally event held on closed highways, usually on sparsely populated parts of the Southwestern United States and covers 50 to 84 miles in length, in two legs with total distances ranging from 97 to 131 miles. These racing events are sanctioned by the Nevada Department of Transportation and its host counties, with participants competing in solo runs against the clock in speed classes ranging from 85 MPH to 170 MPH with a goal of keeping an exact average of their target speed. Drivers may race alone or with a co-driver/navigator and can tap the services of any 4-wheeled vehicle but with some restrictions on open cockpit cars without rollover protection. Some vehicles used in the past include Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Vipers, Winston Cup Race Cars, Panteras, and various Exotics.

The Big Ben Open Road Race is one of the two open road races conducted in West Texas annually (the other being the Road Runner event in October). Ran every April, the BBORR is tagged as the most challenging road race in the nation and covers a course from Fort Stockton, TX to Sanderson, TX and back on Texas State Highway 285. The 118 mile race includes 60 turns and a multitude of elevation changes which offers a tough challenge even to the most experienced drivers. This family friendly event offers speed classes from 85mph for the family sedan or SUV to the Unlimiteds which reach speeds of 200mph. BBORR allows participants from 18 years above, but co-drivers may be below 18 if prior arrangements are made. In order to compete, one must be able to submit the necessary requirements including the registration form prior to the race.
