Rallycross is a motorsport usually conducted on closed mixed-surface racing circuits for modified or specially built road cars competing in sprint-style automobile racing. Vehicles in this competitions sport about 200 bhp (150 kW) stronger engines than World Rally Cars due to their 45mm turbo restrictors. These type of competitions have found a solid following especially in Nordic countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Great Britain. This motorsport has indeed come a long way, from its humble beginnings as a mere TV show in Great Britain way back in 1967, to becoming one of the more popular autosport with competitions such as the FIA European Championships for Rallycross Drivers being conducted annually since the late 1960's. Among those who have made an impact in the realms of rallycross include Norwegian driver Martin "Mister Rallycross" Schanche and Swedish driver Per Eklund.

The FIA European Championship for Rallycross Drivers is a rallycross competition held in Europe and was originally labeled as the Embassy/ERA European Rallycross Championship during its first ever run in 1973. Three years later, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) rechristened the championship to its current name after implementing regulations for rallycross and not long after, gave away the first official European cup. The event continued to evolve as years went on starting with the introduction of the two-class format in 1978 with the advent of the Touring cars class and the Grand Touring cars class. However, the recipient of the first ever true FIA European championship title did not come until 1979 when Martin Schanche, on his Ford Escort RS1800, was declared champion.
