Rallying is a "raw" type of motorsport that is held on public or private roads that are usually unpaved and unforgiving. The vehicles used in this kind of competition are those modified production or specially built road-legal cars that are capable of high speed and incredible handling on any road surface and in every weather condition. Also, rallying participants are consist of a driver and a co-driver, with the latter acting as a navigator to guide the driver through the course with the use of computerized odometers. Participating teams will not be driving on ovals, but will be racing in a point-to-point format between set control points or stages, leaving at regular intervals from one or more start points. These events may take days to complete and can cover over hundreds of miles in various weather conditions.

Rally America is a US sanctioning organization of rally events and is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It began its operations shortly after being founded by rally driver and CPD Rally Team owner Doug Havir in 2002 and has since held the marketing rights to the Rally America Championship. The corporation started out its function as the provider of rally related services and resources to the SCCA ProRally Championship, which include timing and scoring equipment. A couple of years later, RA's function grew considerably after the SCCA decided to transfer the commercial and sanctioning rights of the SCCA ProRally Championship entirely into RA's fold. Not long after, RA created the Rally America Championship consisting of events, mostly of regional and national level rallies, that were formerly handled by the SCCA.
