Sprint Car Racing

Sprint Car Racing is a competition between high powered race cars known as sprint cars and usually conducted on short oval, circular dirt, or paved tracks. Sprint car racing had its humble beginnings during the post-World War 1 era, but the vehicles that were used back then were larger cars that were primarily modified stock cars. Model T cars dominated the entries although other types of cars were also entered. During that era, those home built machines were only known not as sprint cars, but simply "race cars" and "dirt track cars." The name sprint cars only came around 1950 followed by its eventual evolution where cage roll bars, wider tires, body designs, and wings were introduced. Several prominent names in IndyCar and NASCAR also use sprint cars as a vehicle to more high profile divisions, including Jeff Gordon, Sarah Fisher, and Ed Carpenter.

There are several organizations sanctioning Sprint Car Events, including the Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC) and Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA) which are both based in California. But one of the more renowned sanctioning bodies in the U.S.A. is the World of Outlaws which is best known for its winged sprint car racing series in America. The World of Outlaws have been conducting races since 1978 in 23 different states and have featured world class drivers such as Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, and Doug Wolfgang, giving away more than $6 million in prizes all season long. Jimmy Boyd became the first ever World of Outlaw victor after claiming the series’ inaugural event on March 18, 1978 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway with the help of his non-wing car.
