Supermarine Aviation Works
The Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd started life in 1913 as Pemberton-Billing Ltd, producing seaplanes. It changed its name to the Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd when it was sold in 1916.
The company found fame after its wins in the Schneider Trophy for seaplanes, winning three in a row in 1927, 1929 and 1931.
In 1928 Vickers-Armstrong took over and changed the name to Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers) Ltd. In 1938 all Vickers interests were reorganised under the Vickers-Armstrong (Aircraft) Ltd banner, but still allowed Supermarine to design, build and trade under the Supermarine name.
The first and probably the most famous Supermarine landplane design to go into production was the Spitfire.
The Supermarine S.4 British single-engined single-seat racing seaplane built by Supermarine designed by R. J. Mitchell and created a new world record for seaplanes on 13 September 1925 with a speed of 226.752 mph.
