The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is an international touring car championship organized by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), making its debut in 1987 in concurrent to the European Touring Car Championship. The maiden competition, which was exclusive to Group A touring cars, had some additional races held in Australia (Bathurst and Calder Park Raceway), New Zealand, and Japan and was eventually won by Roberto Ravaglia in a BMW M3 (driver) and the Eggenberger Texaco Ford No 7 (entrants). Unfortunately, the FIA would go an and axe the competition after only a year for fear that it would take money away from Formula One. Although the competition made a brief return via the FIA World Touring Car Cup in 1993, it did not return full time until 2005 after taking over the ETCC.
